I am wondering if we can use the possibility given by the laser cutter to both cut and trace the paper to design a pattern for the elective.

It would give the possibility to use non-structural patterns together with structural ones in an intricate way to get ornamentation on the components.

On this example, the green layer would be cut and the red one traced. Variations are possible in the scale of the holes, in the type of subdivision and in the number of iterations.
