Research on Sagrada Familia
The focus of the research in Sagrada Familia will be on the use of geometry and isometries (creating repetitions either through translations, rotation and mirroring for symmetry) in generating the crossing ceiling vaults which are organized in concentric circles around a large central hyperboloid vault which is 4 meters in diameter. Gaudi's work explores the potentials of ruled surfaces in generating a structurally significant and visually appealing central vault which has complex openings. Through the use of a single unit undergoing generative translation - Gaudi was able to create rich new non-classical shapes. Some of the translations he used were rounding forms using parabolas, circle profiles, twinning, intersecting and removing and dissection of spatial figures.

Architectural Problem for the Thesis
The architectural investigation for the thesis would be to explore the potential for digital fabrication to generate architectural form through generative translations. The project aims to investigate the potential for non-classical geometries to become efficient composite structuring system to generate a freestanding structure with tactile qualities that enhance explorations by the body. For instance, rapid CNC Knitting could be used to create a variety of unique unit 'stitches' through translation of knit pattern, structure and parameters. Finally, an integrated singular tensile surface could be generated through a composition of different types of unit stitches that could all respond and move in tandem with one another to become structurally integrated and efficient.

Tools to be explored:
Robotic Fabrication
CNC Knitting Machine

Material Costs (with Tracey):
Nylastx yarn comes in boxes of 20 cones for $150, making each cone $7.50
Flexinol actuator wire comes in two activation temperatures, high temperature (90° celsius) and low temperature (70° celsius), and varying widths
1m spools of Flexinol range from $5.75 - $8.50
5m spools of Flexinol range from $27.50 - $41.25
30% student discount applied through Dynalloy’s SMArt® Steps Program

Machine Time:
In order to cover costs of replaceable parts, mostly broken needles
4 hours = $25
