The problem we are addressing is the static nature of architectural surfaces that only perform a singular function. Mechanical actuation has been used to solve this issue, but it is inefficient. Our research is proposing a new way of using textiles that exploits their translucent, lightweight, and malleable properties while reducing inefficiencies in the form-making processes. We are proposing the development of a composite material system that embeds non-mechanically actuating properties into a textile to create a self-assembling structural system.
